COMPLINE or NIGHT PRAYER
J.P. Kennedy & Sons, New York, 1927

HAIL Mary full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
   R. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
   V. Convert us, O God, our Savior.
   R. And turn away Thy wrath from us.
   V. Incline unto my aid, O God.
   R. O Lord, make hast to help me.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Alleluia, or Praise be to Thee, O Lord, King of eternal glory.

PSALM 131

LORD remember David,* and all his meekness:
How he swore to the Lord,* he vowed a vow to the God of Jacob:
If I shall enter into the tabernacle of my house,* if I shall go up into the bed wherein I lie:
If I shall give sleep to mine eyes,* or slumber to my eyelids,
Or rest to my temples until I find out a place for the Lord,* a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.
Behold we have heard of it at Ephrata; * we found it in the fields of the wood.
We will go into His tabernacle: * we will adore in the place where His feet stood.

Arise, O Lord, into Thy resting place,* Thou and the ark of Thy sanctification.
Let Thy priests be clothed with righteousness,* and let Thy saints rejoice.
For Thy servant David's sake,* turn not away the face of Thy anointed.
The Lord hath sworn truth to David, and He will not make it void: * of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.
If thy children will keep My covenant,* and these My testimonies which I shall teach them,
Their children also for evermore,* shall sit upon thy throne.
For the Lord hath chosen Sion,* He hath chosen it for His dwelling.

This is My rest forever and ever: * here will I dwell for I have chosen it.
Blessing I will bless her widow: * I will satisfy her poor with bread.

I will clothe her priests with salvation: * and her saints shall rejoice with exceeding great Joy.
There will I bring forth the horn to David,* I have prepared a lamp for My anointed.
His enemies I will clothe with confusion: * but upon him shall My sanctification flourish.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,* and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,* world without end.  Amen.

PSALM 132.

BEHOLD how good and how pleasant it is,* for brethren to dwell together in unity:
   Like the precious ointment on the head,* that ran down upon the beard, the beard of Aaron;
Which ran down to the hem of his garment,* as the dew of Hermon which descendeth on Mount Sion.
For there the Lord hath commanded blessing,* and life for evermore.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,* and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,* world without end.  Amen.

PSALM 133

BEHOLD now bless ye the Lord,* all ye servants of the Lord:
Who stand in the house of the Lord,* in the courts of the house of our God.
In the nights lift up your hands to the holy places,* and bless ye the Lord.
May the Lord out of Sion bless thee,* He that made heaven and earth.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,* and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,* world without end.  Amen.
Ant.  O Virgin Mary, there is no one in the world born of woman like to thee:  flourishing like the rose, fragrant as the lily:  pray for us, O holy Mother of God.

LITTLE CHAPTER.
Eccli. 24.

I AM the mother of fair love, and of fear, and of knowledge, and of holy hope.
   R. Thanks be to God.
   R. Intercede for us, O holy Virgin of virgins,* Mary, Mother of God.
Repeat:  Intercede for us, O holy Virgin of virgins,* Mary, Mother of God.
   V. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Repeat:  Intercede for us, O holy Virgin of virgins,* Mary, Mother of God.

Repeat:  Intercede for us, O holy Virgin of virgins,* Mary, Mother of God.

HYMN

VIRGIN, all excelling, Mildest of the mild,
Free from sin preserve us, Meek and undefil'd.
KEEP our life all spotless, Make our way secure:
Till we find in Jesus Joys that shall endure.
PRAISE to God the Father, Honor to the Son,
To the Holy spirit
Be the glory one.  Amen.

   V. After childbirth, O Virgin, thou still didst remain undefiled,
   R. Mother of God, intercede for us.

CANTICLE OF SIMEON.
« NUNC DIMITIS».
Luke 2.

NOW Thou dost dismiss Thy servant, O Lord,* according to Thy word in peace,
Because my eyes have seen * Thy salvation,
Which Thou hast prepared * before the face of all peoples:
A light to the revelation of the gentiles,* and the glory of Thy people Israel.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,* and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end.  Amen.

Kneel during the following antiphon.

Ant.  We fly to thy patronage, O holy Mother of God, despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us from all dangers, O ever blessed Virgin.

   V. O Lord, hear my prayer.
   R. And let my cry come unto Thee.

Let us pray.

GRANT, O merciful God, protection for our frailty:  that we who celebrate the memory of the holy Mother of God may, by the help of her intercession, arise from our sins.  Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, Thy son, who with Thee liveth and reigneth in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.
Amen.

   V. O Lord, hear my prayer.
   R. And let my cry come unto Thee.

   V. Let us bless the Lord.
   R. Thanks be to God.

When Office is said in choir, the Salve and O Lumen should be sung.  All should assist at the daily procession which occurs during them.  Yet those who are prevented, may say them privately in the order following, or terminate the Office at this point with the customary Ave Maria.

COMPLINE PROCESSION

The Salve and O Lumen are omitted on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of Holy Week.

SALVA REGINA

HAIL, holy Queen, mother of mercy, hail, our life, our sweetness and our  hope;  to thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve, to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.  Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.  O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary, P.T, Alleluia.

   V. Make me worthy to praise thee, holy Virgin.
P. T. Alleluia.

   R. Give me strength against thine enemies. P. T.  Alleluia.

Let us pray.

GRANT, we beseech Thee, O Lord God, that we Thy servants, may enjoy continual health of mind and body;  and that through the glorious intercession of blessed Mary, ever virgin, we may be delivered from present sorrow and hereafter enjoy eternal happiness.  Through Christ our Lord.
   R. Amen.

The Litany of the Blessed Virgin and the Inviolata follow the Salve on Saturdays.
